Coaching kids` sports

Updated: January 7, 2009
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL ARE POPULAR WAYS TO GET KIDS OUTSIDE AND GET THEM MOVING. IT CAN ALSO HELP YOU BE INVOLVED WITH YOUR KIDS JERRY REEDER WORKS WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT SPORTS THROUGH THE AMERICAN SPORT EDUCATION PROGRAM AT HUMAN KINETICS. Q: YOUR PROGRAMS TRAIN NOT ONLY COACHES, BUT PARENTS TOO, ABOUT THE BEST WAYS TO ENCOURAGE YOUTH PLAYERS? over the past 25 years, ASEP has trained more than one million coaches, officials, sport administrators, and parents with the philosophy, "Athletes First, Winning Second." Q: WE HAVE SEEN VIOLENCE AT GAMES BUT SINCE CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS A PROBLEM TOO.. IT`S IMPORTANT TO GET KIDS INVOLVED IN SPORTS AND TO STAY INVOLVED. Kids who drop out of sports list reasons like: lack of fun, overemphasis on winning, too much criticism from the coach, competitive stress, lack of playing time, and little skill improvement. Q: WHAT CAN COACHES AND PARENTS DO TO HELP THEIR KIDS DEVELOP ATHLETICALLY AND STICK WITH IT? By building self-esteem and emphasizing skill development over winning. Parents can get training on how to do this ... but also many coaches, especially at the youth level, are parent-coaches. Many are "reluctant volunteers" who`ve stepped forward because no one else would and who may or may not have even played baseball in the past. Very few have had formal coaching training. Q: SOME BELIEVE THAT IF YOU`VE PLAYED THE SPORT AND WERE GOOD AT IT, THEN YOU CAN COACH IT. THAT`S NOT THE CASE? Coaching is essentially teaching, and it`s important for coaches to have the knowledge and ability to teach sport skills. Q: YOUR PROGRAMS PROMOTE A PARTICULAR METHOD FOR TEACHING SPORT SKILLSASEP follows the "IDEA" method. That means we: Introduce the skill demonstrate the skill Explain the skill Attend to players practicing the skill With this method, we have a great deal of interaction, rather than telling the child how to do a skill and them feeling inadequate because they probably won`t get it right the first time.
