Education Group Says U of I Policy is Censorship

There's outrage over a proposed University of Illinois policy.  The Electronic Communication Policy would restrict what's said over the internet.  It would apply to students and faculty at the University.

The University says it protects students rights. It would require require all academic related emails be sent only through a university account.

The Foundation For Individual Rights In Education has a problem with it, especially one section.  It bans "activities that interfere with the University" and "political campaigning."

The group says the policy is overreaching and silences free speech.

"If you're a freshman in the dorms and your primary internet hook up is through the university, basically everything you send whether personal or through university email accounts may be subject to this regulation," FIRE representative Ari Cohn said.

There's currently no U of I internet policy.  The faculty-student senate will vote on the proposal Monday.
