Our Town Tuscola: Fighting Germs with Germs

Updated: August 25, 2011
watch video
A Central Illinois family has discovered a new approach to cleaning and they've turned it into a business in Tuscola.

Chuck Holmes and his family make "Z Probiotics." It fights germs with more germs. Instead of killing the bad bacteria, these products overpopulate an area with good bacteria. When the good bacteria eat up the food source, the bad bacteria die off.

This technique has become very popular with farmers fighting salmonella and viruses.

"Instead of putting antibiotics into the food supply, they can clean the environment, have healthier animals and make it better for all of us."

These cleaners can also be used in hospitals, restaurants and the home.
