Sox starter Jose Contreras goes on disabled list

Updated: January 7, 2009
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jose Contreras was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday due to a pinched nerve in his right leg. Contreras, who has gotten off to an incredible 5-0 start this season, is suffering from irritation of the sciatic nerve. It`s a big loss for the defending World Series champions, as Contreras leads the majors with a 1.41 ERA. For his efforts, Contreras was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for April. He is 16-2 since the 2005 All-Star break. Contreras allowed one run over 7 1/3 innings in his last start, Thursday against Seattle, extending his major-league best winning streak to 13 games. The 34-year-old has gone 13-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his last 14 regular season starts. The DL move is retroactive to May 5. Contreras established career highs in victories (15), starts (32), innings (204.2) and strikeouts (154) in his first full season with the White Sox in 2005. The White Sox also called up right-hander Charlie Haeger from Triple-A Charlotte, and he`s expected to make his major league debut by starting Wednesday`s game against the Angels. The 22-year-old Haeger has handcuffed hitters with his developing knuckleball, compiling a 3-0 mark and a 0.68 ERA in six starts for Charlotte this season.
