Juan Encarnacion went 3-for-4 with a double triple, home run and four runs batted in as the St.Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3, in the middle test of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.
Hector Luna also went 3-for-4 with a run scored and both Jim Edmonds and David Eckstein had two hits for the Cardinals, who have won five of their last six contests.
St. Louis starter Jeff Suppan (1-2) earned the victory after going seven innings, giving up three runs - none earned -- on four hits without a walk and three strikeouts. Jason Isringhausen pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Craig Wilson drove in two runs and Ronny Paulino went 2-for-3 with a run scored but starter Victor Santos (1-4) went just five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three for the Pirates, who have lost six straight games.
St. Louis got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Luna worked a one-out walk, stole second and went to third on a fielding error. After Albert Pujols was intentionally walked, Edmonds singled to drive in Luna. Encarnacion followed with a ground-rule double that scored Pujols for a 2-0 lead.
"Well, yes, it (feels) good," Encarnacion said. "I`ve been struggling the whole time I`ve been here. It only takes one at-bat to get started. Hopefully it`s starting to get together for me."
Pittsburgh took a brief lead in the top of the third. Paulino stroked a one- out single before Santos reached on a fielding error. After Chris Duffy was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jack Wilson singled to score Paulino. Two batters later, Craig Wilson singled to score both Santos and Duffy for a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals, however, scored twice in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Edmonds worked a two-out walk before Encarnacion hit his first homer of the season to give St. Louis a 4-3 lead.
St. Louis added a run in the fifth. Pujols singled with one out before Encarnacion tripled two batters later to give the Cards a 5-3 lead.
Scott Spiezio belted a solo homer in the seventh to cap the scoring for the Cardinals.
