Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee will be in a cast for up to six weeks after suffering a fracture in his right hand, the team announced on Thursday.
Lee suffered a fracture of the distal radial and the distal ulna bones after a collision with Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal at first base during the seventh inning of Wednesday`s 5-4 win over Los Angeles.
Last season`s National League batting champion was hitting .318 with three homers and 10 RBI in 14 games.
Lee enjoyed a breakout season last year, batting .335 with 46 home runs and 107 RBI, all career highs. The monster year netted him a new five-year contract earlier this season that will keep him with the Cubs through the 2010 season.
The former Padre and Marlin will most certainly land on the disabled list, joining fellow Cubs Mark Prior and Kerry Wood to form a trio of talent currently sidelined for Chicago.
In 1,199 career games, Lee is a .276 hitter with 211 home runs, 636 RBI and 652 runs scored.
