J.D. Drew hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the second of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.
Drew also drove in the other run for the Dodgers, who snapped a two-game skid. Kenny Lofton and Rafael Furcal each scored a run in the victory.
Derek Lowe started for the Dodgers and allowed one run on five hits through seven strong innings. Lowe also struck out six and walked just one batter, but was not a factor in the decision.
Carlos Zambrano took the mound for Chicago, which had won two straight prior to this contest. Zambrano, who also was left with a no-decision, gave up one run on four hits over six frames with three strikeouts and five walks.
"(When) you get a pitching performance like that, you want to get a win," said Chicago`s Juan Pierre. "We should be able to scrape together two or three runs, but we didn`t get it done. Offensively, we have to get better."
Neifi Perez drove in the lone run in the loss.
With the score tied 1-1, Will Ohman (1-1) took the mound for the Cubs in the bottom of the ninth inning. After getting the first two outs, Ohman allowed a walk to Lofton, who stole second base. Drew then lifted a single to right field that allowed Lofton to cross the plate with the winning run.
"I tried to make sure I stayed behind the ball," Drew said. "I was fortune to get the good part of the bat on the ball."
The Dodgers opened up a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Furcal bunted his way to first and moved to second on a groundout by Lofton. Drew then stroked an RBI double.
Lowe found a bit of trouble in the top of the sixth when the Cubs put runners on first and third with one out. However, he fanned Aramis Ramirez and forced a groundout by Michael Barrett.
Chicago knotted the contest in the seventh. A pair of singles by Jacque Jones and Matt Murton once again saw the Cubs have runners at the corners, this time with no outs. Perez then grounded into a fielder`s choice and Jones crossed the plate. Pinch-hitter John Mabry then struck out and Pierre`s grounder ended the frame.
Scott Eyre replaced Zambrano and tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, and Takashi Saito (1-0) did the same for the Dodgers in both the eighth and ninth innings.
