gavelIllini basketball player Jamar Smith was in Champaign County Court today for a hearing on a probation violation. Police say Smith admitted that he drank three beers early Friday morning. That is a violation of his probation for drunk driving.

Smith didn't say anything when he got to court with his family. And the hearing lasted only minutes.  The state recommended his probation be revoked. His lawyer asked for another hearing date. That was set for September.

After that, Smith left the court house without a word. Now it's up to the judge.

If Smith is found guilty of violating probation he can be punished up to the maximum sentence of his original crime of drunk driving. That could mean 12 years in prison.

No decision has been made on if Smith will play on the team next season.
