Music Teacher Remembered
Updated: November 1, 2010
CHAMPAIGN - Students, teachers and the community knew Bob Smith as a man whose passed the love of music to others.
"I still do theater now, he was the one that got me into it," said Kate Myers who went to Booker T. Washington Elementary. She's now a sophomore in high school and thanks Smith for passing on his love to her.
"I just remembered every time we went to class, it was just like a whole different world," said Myers.
Bob Smith retired from BTW after 11 years this summer. He was diagnosed with cancer in May and passed away Monday morning.
Before he passed away, community members had already planned to put together a tribute to honor him at the Community United church in Champaign. The tribute became a celebration of Smith's life. Money collected from the tribute would go to a music scholarship in his name.
From former students, to the Champaign Urbana Theater company, people sang and dance in honor of Smith.
"He would say i hope you love music as much as I do, and thank you for being here to let me know how much I taught you about music," said his colleague Shauna Carey who is an art teacher.
People can donate to the fund by going to the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company.
