Derick Fabert

Updated: January 17, 2011

Derick Fabert has always liked the weather.  Once during Kindergarten a class survey asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  Derick still has the paper that shows his response being "The Weather Man."
Coming to central Illinois is sort of a homecoming for Derick.  He’s originally from Brooklyn, IN, a small town south of Indianapolis. However, he’s spent a lot of time in central Illinois as his Dad is from Arthur. Many family members still live in the WCIA viewing area and Derick couldn’t be happier to be closer to them.

Derick graduated from Martinsville High School (Indiana), the same High School as John Wooden, in 2002.  From there he attended Purdue University where he graduated with a degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science. Despite being from a conference rival, Derick still looks forward to cheering for the Illini, except one Saturday in the fall, and two games in the winter.

Before coming to WCIA, Derick worked at KSFY Action News in Sioux Falls, SD. While there, Derick covered many weather events, including blizzards, tornadoes, and the floods of 2010.  Two events really stick out in Derick’s memory.  In the spring of 2009 Derick was chasing tornadoes and severe weather one day, and the next day was standing in a blizzard. Also, during Christmas of 2009, Derick covered a Blizzard that dropped more than two feet of snow and brought winds of up to 50 mph to South Dakota.  He wasn’t able to leave the station for four days.

Her Derek, you talk about temperature differences and said the front must be right here - SHOW THE FRONTS!! Give us some weather information. This new system is such a step backward. Just blobs of color with no data or substance.

Why are you not showing the temperature, etc for Danville. When watching the news we like to see the temperature and weather information for Danville. Thank you for looking into this for us

Hey Derek! Welcome to Central Illinois/WCIA! You're doing a great job!
I'm not being critical and maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but check with Men's Warehouse; I think your suit jacket is only supposed to be buttoned with the second button. The rest are not supposed to be buttoned.
