Steve Staeger

Updated: February 13, 2013

Steve joined the WCIA 3 news team in February 2010.  He comes to Springfield from metro Detroit, where he was born and raised.

Steve began his career at WDIV-TV in Detroit, where he worked two years as an associate producer on the morning show.

Since he joined WCIA, Steve has been busy.  He covered both the corruption trial and re-trial of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in Chicago.  He was one of the first to tweet the verdict of the trial from the courtroom.  He even traveled to Denver, Colorado to witness Blagojevich report to prison.

Steve worked for WCIA and seven other television stations covering the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.  He also spent election night in Chicago covering President Obama's election night celebration for several TV stations.

As a trained investigative reporter, Steve helped launch "You Paid For It," a series of reports on questionable government spending.  A report on out-of-state Link Card transactions prompted an internal investigation at the state house.   The story was also nominated for a Mid-America Emmy award.  Steve's reporting also exposed a questionable perk for Champaign's former superintendent, Arthur Culver.

Steve was promoted to Capitol Bureau Chief in 2012.  He helps spearhead coverage for WCIA's Connected to the Capitol team.

When he's not at the office, you can usually find Steve on the golf course or watching a hockey game.  He loves to cook and is a food nut.
