Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Mike Davis finished with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, as Illinois held on to beat Michigan, 60-50, in a quarterfinal matchup of the Big Ten Tournament.
Illinois (24-8) advances to Saturdays semifinal, and will face the winner of the quarterfinal game between No. 24 Purdue and Penn State. Michigan (20-13), with its conference tournament now over, will have to wait to see if it can make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid.
Demetri McCamey had 12 points and six boards for the Illini, who played without Chester Frazier. The guard leads the team in assists and steals to go with 5.7 points per game, but missed Fridays contest after having surgery on his injured hand.
Calvin Brock took Fraziers place in the starting lineup, and ended with six points. Trent Meacham had 10 points for Illinois, which had lost two in a row to end the regular season, but shot 61.9 percent in the second half to secure the win.
DeShawn Sims had team highs of 15 points and eight rebounds, but Michigan couldnt keep the momentum from a 73-45 win over Iowa in Thursdays opening round. Zack Novak added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Wolverines.
Illinois held a 25-24 lead after a back-and-forth first half, but started to pull away with a 10-2 run to open the second. Mike Tisdale began the stretch with a jumper and ended it with another for a 35-26 advantage.
After Michigan got back within six, the Illini ran off 13 consecutive points. Meacham had eight points to begin the run, while Brocks layup capped it to stretch the Illinois lead to 50-31 with 11 1/2 minutes to go.
The Wolverines, though, used their own 13-0 run late in the game to make it close. Sims had a three-pointer and jumper to end it, getting Michigan within 54-47 with 3 1/2 minutes left.
But Davis responded with a jumper, and Michigan sank only one more shot the rest of the way, as Illinois cruised to the finish.
