Man Dead After Shooting In Mattoon

Updated: July 9, 2007
crime scene(MATTOON)---Police in Mattoon are searching for clues after a shooting leaves a man dead. It happened Saturday night just after 8:00pm when police were called to a fight at the 1500 block of Shelby Avenue. About 10 minutes later a man with a gunshot walked into the Burger King located on Charleston Avenue and asked for help. Witnesses say the man, identified as 30-year old Robert Gordon stumbled in and showed employees the hole in his chest and then made an odd request. "They called and they said a man just walked in the door and leaned against the ice cream counter and said I've been shot...I need a glass of water." Says business owner Gene Hoots "We don't have things like that happen here." Hoots says the man drank the water and then fell to the floor. He was then taken to the hospital where a short time later he was pronounced dead. He says he re-opened his business early Sunday morning and was cautious because he had no idea if the gunman might return. Police have identified another suspect in the case as 25-year-old Matthew Depew. Cops believe he got into a fight with Gordon earlier in the night. They don't know for sure yet who pulled the trigger, however there is a news conference scheduled for Monday afternoon.
