Fireworks celebration a hit
Updated: July 5, 2007
Champaign County's Freedom Celebration created quite the buzz in the community. Since last night organizers say they've been getting positive feedback on its new location in Dodds Park.People say it's definitely a good possibility it would return there next year. Organizers say Dodds Park is still better for the celebration compared with Memorial Stadium used in years past. Dodds Park is at least three times bigger, giving people more space to do everything from grilling to playing frisbee.
There were some problems for drivers because they all showed up at the same time. However, leaving the site took just as long as it did for people driving from Memorial Stadium. Champaign Police Sargent Scott Friedlein says, " Everyone truly loved this venue and the public perception I'm getting there is that there will be a strong push to bring it next there. "
Since this was the first year at this location, organizers are looking at ways to move traffic. One idea is to possibly have a concert after the fireworks show so everyone won't all be leaving at the same time.
