Urbana Standoff Ends Peacefully
Updated: July 3, 2007
Tense moments in Urbana today. A wanted man locked himself in a motel room and he told the cops he had a gun. This all started around 10:30 this morning when police were trying to arrest him for a burglary. The standoff ended about two hours later..
The suspect is 30 year old Daniel McElfresh. Police were issuing a warrant to the 30 year old suspect for not showing up to court for a burglary charge when things quickly changed. Motel employee Deborah Kelly was working on the same floor when she saw Police. " They went up stairs and they were knocking on the door for awhile, and they must've barricaded the door because there's a lot of stuff moving in the room."
Police say this Mcelfresh locked himself in the room. He told cops he had a gun but kelly never saw it. " "The police came and asked me if he had a gun. I told him if he had a gun i never seen him with a gun. I think he just said it to scare them."
The room was rented out to Krista Brinkley of Springfield. She was also in the room but wasn't a hostage.Motel workers say the two were frequent customers. Kelly tells us, "she didn't seem like she was a dangerous person and he didn't either."
As the standoff continued, Police shut down Cunningham Road between Interstate 74 and Perkins Drive and drivers were rerouted.
Police never found a gun. Mcelfresh is behind bars on several preliminary charges including the orginal for burglary
