Superintendent Tom Berterand says Rochester High School will be on lockdown for the rest of the school year. All because a student brought a loaded gun to school. This has some parents worried. Marge Ray's son is a freshman at Rochester High. "It's just so surprising. You know you just don't think about things like that in Rochester. You know we're just a small community and pretty tightly knit. And for something like this to happen, it's really a shock," says Ray. Bertrand says parents were notified of the incident, mostly via email. It's finals week, but parents were still allowed to come and get their kids if they wanted to. Police say school officials handled the situation well. Rochester Police Chief Bill Marass says, "The individual that had the weapon is in custody. And as I said, they're trying to get back to normal. And parents should feel that their kids are in a safe setting because they are." Police wouldn't say what they believe the student's intentions were with the gun. But Berterand says he's thankful this incident didn't end up as a deadly disaster. Bertrand says, "Absolutely relieved and thankful. The folks involved did what they are supposed to do. And the information was brought to us. We implemented the plan like we were supposed to do." The superintendent says once all of this calms down, they will review their school security plan. Rochester High's last day of school is Monday. And school leaders say there will be an increase in security until then.
