Matt Coffman is a frequent Amtrak passenger, often traveling from Chicago to Springfield. And hes trying to get online as he waits for the train. "Nothin, it just doesnt connect," says Coffman. He says its a disappointment, "Yeah, yeah it was, it was. I tried all day-- coming down to get on the internet and nothin." But if Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn has his way, passengers like Coffman will be able to go online at any Amtrak station and on any Amtrak train. "I think weve got to understand in the 21st century, were in an information age. We wanna help students and business people and everyday people use the internet in a positive way that helps them," says Quinn. Quinn wants lawmakes to approve a measure that would allow the state to do a feasibility study on train internet access. If that happens, he wants to get the trains online as soon as possible. Quinn says the wireless network would be installed along the Amtrak train tracks across the state. He says thats whats been done in other states and thats what needs to be done in Illinois. "I think it will increase the number of passengers and give people a positive way to do their business, study or whatever the case might be," says Quinn. Coffman says if trains had internet access, he board the train more often. "I do think it would make me take the train a little bit more... Id be able to get a lot of work done on the train home because it is kind of a long train ride back. And itd be a good addition I think," says Coffman. Quinn says the study would determine how much it would cost to install internet access along the tracks.
