DECATUR- It started out as a typical Saturday night at an off campus party that suddenly took a turn for the worst.
"We had a few people over and some uninvited guests came in and we're hassling some girls so we asked them to leave."said one of the students who lives at the house where the party started.
Then a fight broke out,  "Some guy pulled out a gun and he started waving it at everyone."
The students say they didn't have time to think about what to do next.
"I didn't really think about it just some guy comes out with a pistol could be loaded...Turns out it was all the stuff that's been going around with school shootings, last thing i wanted was for him to start spraying out into a crowd of people."
One student then held the gun man down until Decatur police showed up. It was a decision campus security officers say may have been a risk.
Safety and security said, "After the handgun was displayed that becomes a personal decision. He took the steps he thought was necessary then I can't fault for him that."
The students say it was a risk they were willing to take.. and just maybe they did something good.
"We got a guy off the street with the gun who knows we could have prevented a murder that was gonna happen in the future."
