Gibson City v. Governor

The Gibson City Council voted unanimously, Monday, on a resolution opposing the Gross Receipts Sales Tax. Mayor Daniel Dickey thinks his city is the first to take such a stand, but he's hoping it isn't the last.

We've heard Chambers of Commerce come out against the plan.  In this case, the whole town wants it shot down. Dickey says his city is trying to bring in more businesses, and more people.  He says the new tax plan would do the opposite.  The governor's proposal would tax all businesses bringing in more than two-million dollars a year.  That worries some business owners.  They say it will hurt them, because even if they bring in that much money, it doesn't mean they're making a profit.  The mayor hopes the resolution shows the governor what his plan would do to their small town.  "We have less businesses because we're small.  And if it affects one business, that could really hurt a small town.  I think it could hurt every town in Illinois if this goes through," says Dickey.

Governor Blagojevich says the plan would help education and health-care.  And he says it's time for businesses to pay their fair share.
Dickey says he's all for improved schools and health-care, but this is not the way to do it. He's hoping other towns, even counties, will join his push against the plan.  And he hopes the Governor gets the message.
