Why So Many "Copy Cat" Incidents After Virginia Tech

Updated: April 21, 2007
VT Shooting(CHAMPAIGN)---The threat left at Monticello High School on Thursday is just one of many "copy cat" acts since Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech. Combine the incident at Monticello with an anthrax scare at a state office in Springfield and a near shooting at a factory in Sullivan and people may be wondering what exactly is going on. But psychologists say this type of behavior is actually quite predictable. Julie Kartel is with the Mental Health Center in Champaign, she says the constant media attention on Monday's shootings sort of glamorize the whole incident and give others motivation to act out in similar ways. That's why she says it's so important to communicate with one another especially if you think someone is in need of help. Kartel says people who are thinking of doing such things often try to tell people through writings or messages as Virginia Tech's Cho Seung Hui did leading up to this week's shooting spree. She says bottom line, if you sense someone's ready to act out, just tell someone.
