MertzCHARLESTON - A man convicted of murdering an Eastern Illinois University student in 2001 could soon return to a Coles County courtroom.

Attorneys for 29-year-old Anthony Mertz of Rossville have filed a petition to get his death sentence overturned. The Coles County State's Attorney says that would bring him back before his original trial judge in Charleston.

Mertz killed EIU student Shannon McNamara back in 2001. Evidence showed Mertz strangled McNamara, then stabbed her with DNA evidence to back it up.

His first death sentence appeal was turned down by the Illinois Surpreme Court.
