Churches Get Wired
Updated: April 6, 2007
With Easter just days away, people who don't regularly go to church are looking toward the Internet, to search for a congregation that's right for them. Churches say in today's age..it's really important to have a web-page, showing people what they have to offer. The most contemporary churches and the most traditional are all putting their faith in the net.
Parishioners have been singing at the First Presbyterian Church, Champaign, since 1867. It's a traditional atmosphere, but it's not stuck in the past when it comes to getting its message out.
Rick Snyder, Senior Pastor, says, "ten years ago, fifteen years ago, most people looked to the yellow pages to find out about churches. And most of the new members who join our church now find out about us by the Internet."
All you have to do is type church on a search engine, along with a city. You'll get a laundry list of places to choose from. That's why church leaders are trying to make their sites stand out.
New Horizon United Methodist is a contemporary church. They put fun pictures on their site, along with pod-casts to draw people in.
Roger Sodsod, Webmaster, says, "we're getting more and more people who are saying, we've been listening to your messages for about six months now. We just wanted to meet you in person."
But some people never even step foot in a church, and they still get the word of god, thanks to Internet churches. Live streaming video of church services, or other sermons that are you at any time. It's convenient for some, but others say, it's just not the same.
Webber, Champaign says on the Internet, "you don't get the sense of humanity the sense of spirit that I get when I'm interacting with my fellow human beings, and my friends and those I share the same faith and belief with."
