Village Leader Spot Up For Grabs

Updated: April 2, 2007
Five hundred and fifty people live in Pesotum. For many, it's a life they choose for it's quietness and similarity to small towns. Pesotum native Travis Hixson says they're the reason why he loves his community, "you go outside and people say hi to you." Two years ago, Paul Rennels moved here with his wife, also enjoying how close he is to his neighbors, "we all help each other out if somebody needs something, we'll borrow a lawn mower."
Neighbors say, this is the place where you can call on anyone to help out, but there's one plea no one is answering. I asked several people in Pesotum who was running for village president, many didn't know; that's because the answer is no one  This isn't the first time no one has run for mayor. Two years ago, the same thing happened, so the Board of Trustees appointed Tim Lecher. He says "it's disappointing in a sense, " considering no one is running for the spot again. Last year, the Board of Trustees increased the pay for village president, partially to attract people to the post and also because of the commitment. Lecher says he understands why people may not want to run, because of the time constraint, " I put in usually 12-13 hours a weeks, sometimes more, sometimes less. " Lecher says he didn't want to run again, hoping others will be more active. " I'll gladly accept the appointment if it comes again, but I would like to see others get involved", Lecher adds
Some say, they may walk down that path someday, including Rennels, "maybe a couple more years." Hixson, says he too, will look into it, after all, his father once held the spot years ago.
At this point, people who want to run for village president must be write-ins. If no one goes for the job, the Board will appoint someone again.
