Senate Passes State Smoking Ban

Updated: March 29, 2007
no smokingIt's a yes vote for no smoking statewide. The state senate signed off on its version of a smoke-free Illinois on Thursday. It would stop people from lighting up in all public places except hotel rooms and nursing homes. The state says it could lose up to $60 million in cigarette tax money if the ban becomes law. Supporters say it's worth it. They say the state's ban is stronger than local ones. Cheri Manrique of the CU Smokefree Alliance says, "If the law passes in Illinois, than the CU Smokefree Alliance's job will be done because it will be all work places. That's what we've been working for for the last 4 years. And it will be even stricter than Champaign's. It will be even stricter than Urbana's because Urbana's ban is only 6 feet from entrances, and this will be 15 feet from all entrances." The house is poised to vote on its own smoking ban. There's no word from the governor's office if he'll sign it if lawmakers can agree on a single plan.
