Schools to co-op sports programs

DOUGLAS COUNTY -- Two schools will soon join forces for sports. The Villa Grove School District voted to co-op with Heritage High School Monday night.

So far, just certain sports are affected. They include football, baseball, girls basketball and bass fishing. Those are the sports schools are most concerned about their numbers.

Villa Grove's superintendent says a co-op is a great way to build those teams. Football is Heritage's main priority. The school can't field a team on its own after breaking off from Shiloh.

It will also provide new opportunities for students. Villa Grove doesn't have a bass fishing team, but will now have that as an option because of the co-op.

A lot of people in Villa Grove were worried about losing the legacy of the Blue Devils because co-ops often adopt a new name, color or even mascot. The superintendent says those issues still need to be discussed between both schools.

He says they'll meet soon to work out those details. The changes will be in place by next school year.
