MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (UI Release) --
The University of Illinois wrestling team was defeated by top-seeded
Oklahoma State, 33-3 in the first round of the NWCA National
Duals Championships. No. 3 Jesse Delgado was the lone Illini to win
their match as he improved to 18-3 on the season.
"We
gave away too many matches by not hustling and not making good
decisions," head coach Jim Heffernan said. "We lost five matches that
were very winnable,
and against a great team, you are going to have a hard time winning."
The
match started at 125 pounds with No. 3 Jesse Delgado taking on Eddie
Kilmara. The Cowboy got on the board first with a takedown and Delgado
escaped to make
the score 2-1 after the first period. Delgado fought for the escape
midway through the second to tie up the match with two. Kilmara escaped
to push the score to 3-2 before Delgado scored the winning takedown to
win the match 4-3.
At
133, Daryl Thomas dropped a 12-1 major decision to No. 6 Jon Morrison
to give the Cowboys a 4-3 lead in the team score. Next, Steven Rodrigues
was defeated
by Julian Feikert 4-2 at 141 pounds while Ervin was pinned by No. 1
Jordan Oliver in 58 seconds to bring the Cowboys lead to 13-3 over the
Illini.
Next, at 157, Matt Nora was defeated by No. 10 Alex Dieringer by a 14-5 major decision while at 165,
No.
8 Conrad Polz and No. 3 Tyler Caldwell fought hard throughout the
entire seven minutes. However Caldwell scored the only points with an
escape and riding
time to take the 2-0 victory over Polz. At 174, No. 8 Jordan Blanton
wrestled No. 2 Chris Perry. The two were scoreless after the first
period while they both exchanged escapes to tie the score 1-1. The
riding time point was the winning factor as Perry edged
Blanton 2-1 to give the Cowboys the 23-3 lead with three matches
remaining.
Next,
No. 18 Tony Dallago was defeated by No. 12 Chris Chionuma by a 7-5
decision while one of the best matches came next at 197. Mario Gonzalez
took on No.
11 Blake Rosholt and was tied 2-2 after seven minutes. In overtime,
Gonzalez scored a quick escape but Rosholt countered with a takedown and
a reversal in the second 30 second period to take the win, 6-3. The
Illini dropped the match at heavyweight as No. 3
Alan Gelogaev defeated Chris Lopez by a 17-5 major decision to make the
final score 33-3.
The Illini squad will have a week off before hosting the Big Ten Championships at the Assembly Hall on March 9-10.
