One Year Anniversary of Springfield Torandoes
Updated: March 11, 2007
SPRINGFIELD - Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating tornadoes that struck Springfield. For the most part things are back to normal, but for some the clean up continues. One church in the storm's path is still in shambles. A year ago parishioners gathered on a Sunday evening at the Pentecostal Power Church. Little did they know later that night two tornadoes would rip through Springfield destroying the church where they prayed and worshiped.
Today the church is still in ruins as Pastor Lowvell Ross tries to clean-up the remains alone. It's the only lot in the neighborhood that hasn't been cleared since tornados wiped out several homes in the area. The church's altar still stands and Ross's intention is to rebuild the rest of the church. He says he considered selling the property, but to have the old sanctuary back on the block would really spell a lot.
He's taking his time with rebuilding because he didn't get federal funding and will have to rebuild with money from fundraisers. Ross says he's stayed in touch with parishioners since the tornados and all of them have encouraged him to rebuild. Ross says he's not sure when he will start construction on the church.
