SPRINGFIELD -- Police around the area have their hands full as they deal with car crashes on both local roads and the interstates.

They've responded to cars sliding into ditches and semi-trucks tipping over. I-57 southbound from Pesotum to Mattoon was shut down for a period of time last night after a four semi crash. Drivers had to wait for hours before the lanes were cleared.

I-55 was a similar story. Several semi-trucks tipped over because of the strong winds, causing lane closures as well. All of them have since reopened.

No major injuries to report. Police say they were mostly dealing with fender benders.

Drivers are encouraged to head right home and stay at home. If you have to go out, make sure you're driving slowly, keeping enough distance between you and the car ahead of you, and have a charged phone in case of an emergency.
