City getting prepared for winter weather
Updated: December 19, 2012
Trucks are on standby waiting for whatever mother nature brings. This year public works has some new equipment.
For the first time they'll be spraying brine on the roads. It's a mixture of salt and water that melts ice quicker.
So far a machine has made around 20 thousand pounds worth that's ready to go.
"What we're putting down isn't salt waiting to get wet it's already activated and so it will help with keeping ice off the roads better," says Kris Koester, a Public Works spokesperson.
Champaign County has been using this brine mixture for a few years now. The city says about 20 crew members are ready for Thursday.
If the weather gets bad enough -- they'll work two 12 hour shifts.
