CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois University is honored for helping save lives. That's because it installed sprinkler systems, fire detectors and alarms to its campus housing.

The state set the deadline for having sprinklers in all on-campus housing by 2013. EIU finished updating all 28 of its buildings this summer. Charleston's assistant fire chief said the university took a lot of proactive steps. Just this past semester, two separate cooking-related fires in the University Court were put out by sprinklers.
