DANVILLE -- A shiny surprise is giving a big boost to the local Salvation Army.

A gold coin was dropped into a red kettle there this weekend. It's a South African Kruggerand. The army says the same coin gets donated every year, wrapped inside a ten dollar bill.

And it's always in the same bucket at the County Market near the village mall. It's worth at least $1600.

"They want to do it kind of like a secret Santa and they want to bless others. It just makes our Christmas a little bit brighter to know that there are people out there that this amount, they want to give to us so that we can help those in need," said Salvation Army Captain Judith Lowder

She says they'll take it to several coin shops to get the best price.
