medDECATUR - It's a disease that has the potential to kill thousands, the only problem is knowing where or when it could strike.

Doctors say pandemic flu is a real threat and the key is being prepared. So today, officials in Macon County helped to spread the word so people can protect themselves in the event of such a disaster.

Officials with the Macon County Health Department say everybody needs to have a plan in case of a major outbreak of Pandemic Flu in this country. "If the government creates a plan and this is what we're going to do and the community doesn't know about it or prepares for it then the plan's going to fail," said Shannon Comer with the Macon County Health Department.

The department is helping people put together kits and information to prepare for a pandemic flu outbreak. They say the kits can actually help you be prepared in any disaster.
