Player Update

Updated: February 15, 2007
JamarSmith2007-02-15-1171562489.jpgAn update on the car crash involving two U of I basketball players. Sophomore Jamar Smith now has a lawyer to represent him following the accident where he and teammate Brian Carlwell slammed into a tree. Mark Lipton says he will represent Smith in any upcoming legal action resulting from the accident. U of I police are still investigating the crash, where a U of I spokesperson said Smith left the scene before police were called, and drove back to his apartment complex in Savoy. Lipton is the same lawyer who represents Smith's teammate Rich McBride who was suspended for six games earlier in the season stemming from a drunk driving incident last September. Police are awaiting toxicology tests from Smith to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Brian Carlwell is in fair condition at Carle Hosptial in Urbana. Coach Weber says Carlwell's health continues to improve, and he should be out of the hospital in the next few days. Weber added Smith is back with his family in Peoria.
