Jorge Cantu`s two-run single in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, at U.S. Cellular Field.
Dioner Navarro ended 3-for-4, hitting the game-tying solo homer in the eighth inning, for the Devil Rays, who salvaged the finale of this three-game set and ended a six-game losing streak. Delmon Young continued his torrid start in the majors, going 4-for-5 with a run scored, as Tampa Bay ended a six-game road trip 1-5.
A.J. Pierzynski ended 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the White Sox, who had a three-game win streak halted and had their lead for the final American League playoff spot shrink to one-half game over Minnesota.
"I don`t watch the scoreboard," said Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen. "We have to win as many as we can. Watching now is too much. I do pay attention but I worry about my team, how we`re doing."
The Twins beat the Kansas City Royals, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon.
In the 10th, Chicago reliever Brandon McCarthy (3-5) started the inning on the hill and got into trouble right away. He yielded a leadoff single to Young, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later he intentionally walked Greg Norton to set up the double play. However, he ended up walking Navarro on four pitches and then yielded a single to left by Cantu that scored the go-ahead runs.
Seth McClung pitched the bottom of the inning to pick up his third save of the season, securing the win for reliever Ruddy Lugo (2-2).
The White Sox went ahead in the third inning when Jermaine Dye singled home Brian Anderson, but the Devil Rays responded in the fourth when Travis Lee plated Norton with a base hit.
Tampa Bay then went ahead in the sixth. Navarro doubled to begin the inning, moved to third on a Cantu fly out and after a Lee walk, scored on Damon Hollins` force out.
In the bottom of the inning, Chicago went in front, 3-2, when Pierzynski connected for a two-run homer with two outs.
Navarro then homered with one out in the eighth inning to tie the contest.
"Navarro all year, he has had some nice at-bats in clutch situations," said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon. "A lot of the things that we did we haven`t been able to put together all at once and we did."
Chicago starter Javier Vazquez went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking three. His counterpart, Tampa Bay starter Jason Hammel, yielded three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
