Fire Destroys ISU Fraternity
Updated: April 20, 2011
Dozens of students are without a place to live after a fraternity house goes up in flames at Illinois State University. The fire destroyed the Delta Sigma Phi house early Wednesday. 30 men living in the frat house are okay, but the house is not. A firefighter says there were multiple calls about midnight reporting the fire. When they arrived, the two-story house was already engulfed. Dozens of firefighters from Normal and Bloomington were on scene.
An investigation into the cause is underway. Authorities think a fan sparking in the upstairs is to blame. The fraternity president says members practice a fire drill, and that's what prevented an even bigger tragedy. He says he's glad everyone made it out safely. A university spokesperson says it's a particularly hard time for the students with finals approaching. Leaders say they'll help them anyway they can.
ISU's Critical Response Team and the Red Cross responded to help students find a place to stay and replace some of what they lost for class. The house was not required to install a sprinkler system when it was built. The fraternity had just received a grant to install one this summer.
