UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Students still support the chief. A referendum was sent out by students to gauge campus support.

The results came out pro-Chief Illiniwek. 78% voted in support of the school symbol out of more than 11,000 votes.

The chief was retired in 2007 after pressure from the NCAA. Chancellor Phyllis Wise says that won't change. In a statement to students she said,

While many have memories of the chief.. it is important to
understand the distinction between recognizing our history
and embracing our future. I feel we must continue to move
    forward together as a family.
