DANVILLE -- An Angel Among Us gives the power of pampering. Welcome to Glamour Friday. There are manicures, entertainment and socializing. It's North Logan Healthcare Center's version of a spa day. The ladies love it.

71-year old Loretta Crowder said, "I had only my nails done twice in my life when I came here."

"It's relaxing and someone else doing it for you? That's good," explained 84-year old Martha Mullins.

Staff members run Glamour Friday, but one person is here every week, just because.

"I just wandered in one day and keep wandering back in."

Claudia Ferrell has been volunteering for five years now. Her background is teaching, not nails.

"Look at my nails. I don't even do my own," she said.

But Claudia said perfection isn't important.

"It doesn't have to be anything you're trained to do, but if you can do what needs to be done, then just do it."

Part of the experience is trying to pick a color or maybe a design. It may not seem like a big deal but here it is.

Claudia said, "In a situation where there is very little they can control, they can control that. It's a sense of confidence that they have in a world where they don't have a lot of that any longer. That's really important."

For these residents it's more than just polish. It's what comes with the manicures that matters.

"You hold their hands. Any sort of calming effect you can give, even if it's only for three, four or five minutes is at least that little bit and better than nothing at all."

When you see the smiles, you see what those minutes mean. That's what makes Claudia come back week after week, year after year.

"I just like to be doing."

Mullins agreed, "She's a sweet kid and she does a good job. Well, look at my nails."
