Olympia Fields, Ill. --
Arkansas continues to pace the field at the Seventh Annual
OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational. The Razorbacks shot a two-under par
278 and at +1 take a 12-shot lead over SEC
rival Auburn (+13) into Tuesday's third and final round.
Illinois got a
nice day from sophomore Brian Campbell, who fired an even par 70 to move
into a tie for 14th at +4, just three stroke out of the top five.
Campbell finished strong with birdies on three of
his final five holes.
"Individually,
Brian came back strong," Illinois head coach Mike Small said in
assessing his team's day. "He handled adversity well and kept his focus
all day. When he missed some greens, he missed them
on the correct sides, which you have to do on this golf course. He got
up and down, made a couple really good par saves and birdied two of this
last three."
Sophomore Alex
Burge improved on his opening round by two strokes, shooting a two-over
72 on the 7,080-yard par-70 Olympia Fields South Course. Burge's day
included three birdies. Freshman Charlie Danielson,
meanwhile, is in a tie for 36th after a second-round 74.
"Alex played
strong again," Small said. "He still had a couple of hiccups. If we tidy
those things up, Alex is going to be a good player. A 72 for him is
solid. If we get another one of those from him tomorrow,
that will be huge."
Illinois fell
four spots into a tie for 11th with Clemson at +32 after 36 holes. The
Illini shot a 17-over par 287 and will play the final day with Augusta
State (+33) and Purdue (+36).
"As a team, it
was a rough day today," Small said. "We haven't had one of these in a
while. If you're going to compete at this level, you have to have all
five guys bring it. We have to put today behind
us and come back tomorrow and play strong."
Florida State and
Northwestern are tied for third at +18 with Oklahoma State rounding out
the five at +20. Duke (+22) and Stanford (+22) are tied for seventh and
will tee it up at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Duke's Adam Sumrall had the highlight of the day with a hole-in-one on
the 212-yard par 3 12th.
Arkansas'
Sebastian Cappelen had the best of the nine scores under par on Monday
with a three-under par 67. He leads the race for the individual medalist
at -3 for the tournament, one strong in front of
Duke's Brinson Paolini (-2). Defending champion Patrick Rodgers of
Stanford is just two strokes back at even par after a 68, tied with
Taylor Moore of Arkansas. The Razorbacks' Joe Doramus and first round
leader Nicholas Losole of Northwestern are tied for
fifth at +1.
