Monheim named Big Ten freshman of the week

University of Illinois true-freshman Mason Monheim (Orrville HS, Orrville, Ohio) was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday for his performance against Penn State Saturday at Memorial Stadium. 

Monheim had a game-high 11 tackles against the Nittany Lions, shattering his previous career-high of seven, and also forced a fumble in the game. Monheim has 28 tackles this season, which leads all Big Ten Freshmen and ranks third on the team, while also adding 2.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack and one interception. His two forced fumbles are tied for the most in the Big Ten through week five. 

Other Big Ten weekly honorees this week include Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter (Co-Offensive), Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez (Co-Offensive), Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti (Defensive) and Nebraska kicker/punter Brett Maher (Special Teams).
