1996 - Heavy snow fell in a narrow band about 25 miles wide from Carbondale to Mount Vernon. Snowfall totals were 5 to 7 inches in this band. The snow started as rain, then changed to freezing rain, then sleet, before turning to snow. Numerous accidents were reported as the icy conditions set in.
