Friday, Jul 31, 2009 @01:50pm CDT 10-month-old Suki used to be your typical American Bulldog-
High strung, liked to jump and a fan of chewing *anything in sight.. Whatever was lying around went into her mouth the feat of tables and chair furniture blankets pillows.. Suki's owner Sarah O'Brien knew she had to do *something.. I wanted her to be well disciplined i wanted her to have as calm a demeanor as possible so people weren't intimidated and we could have company in the house and not worry about anyone being knocked over.. So at 3 months old.. Suki and O'Brien traveled to the Green Acres Sportsman's club in Roberts, Illinois for a *professional opinion.. Dan Ihrke is a dog trainer who's worked with several different breeds over the years. He says obedience starts with basic commands.. "We get composure and control and success and then we allow the dog to proceed to the next one because proceeding to the next step for the dog always more fun more activity involved, it's a big reward," he says. Ihrke says the person doing the discipline.. has to do it right.. "99 percent of the time it's the owner.. we've taught them whether we know it or not.. If we do it properly and link us to what they enjoy they're always going to be happily looking to us in a controlled manner to get what they want." The end result? Suki *gets what she wants and O'Brien gets what she's always hoped for.. |
