Reported by: Stacey Morgan / WCIA 3 News Wednesday, May 13, 2009 @05:36pm CDT Wet roads caused a school bus to hydroplane and flip over.
It happened in Humbolt about 15 miles North of Mattoon.
Two adults and five students were on board.
They were headed to Lerna Bridges School.
Students say it happened very quickly.
"I felt it start swerving and then all I know is 'bam!' says 14-year-old Tom Perry, "and my knee went through the window. " And even though Perry was hurt he stepped up to help others. Including two disabled children on the bus. Perry was snoozing on his bus ride to school. He says he woke up just in time to look out his window and see the bus falling towards the ground. His knee broke through the glass. When he looked around he saw bench seats everywhere. Some pinning students to the floor. Perry pushed through his pain to help them get out from underneath and get to safety. "Even though I couldn't barely walk on this leg I just ran up there," he says. "I didn't care. Iwas gonna help the little kid. Seven years old, he couldn't do nothing." Firefighters and state police arrived on the scene shortly after. Perry says he also helped officers by holding the back hatch open so passengers could get out. Everyone was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Perry's knee was X-rayed but checked out okay. He spent the rest of the school day at home recovering and relaxing. |
