Reported by: Stacey Morgan / WCIA 3 News Saturday, Apr 18, 2009 @06:13pm CDT Almost 30 locations are taking part in the Boneyard Art Festival Saturday. Hundreds of artists are highlighted.
That includes artists from the Danville State Correctional Facility. Prisoners are showing their work at the C-U Independent Media Center. And it's for sale.
The money helps the "Books for Prisoners" program.
It has put more than 35,000 books in Illinois prisons since 2004.
"In Illinois, the state de-funded libraries in the 1990's," says the artists' instructor Sarah Ross. "And so there is actually no new books for prisoners. So we actually provide a pretty amazing service." Other galleries and stores opened their doors to the festival as well. Everything from sculpture to photography is on display. The festival continues Sunday as well. The Boneyard Arts Festival moves out and about -- all over Champaign County. There are activities in Bondville, Rantoul and Sidney to name a few.
