Reported by: Rob Collins Thursday, Aug 28, 2008 @02:23pm CDT Some people swear by charcoal. Others prefer propane. And cutting edge grillers are even firing up solar ovens. The kind you use can have a big impact on the environment.
Americans love to grill, but many don't know it's harmful to the environment. Sixty-three percent of backyard barbecues are fired up with briquettes. Charcoal gives off harmful organic compounds and releases high levels of carbon monoxide. If you're a fan of charcoal use lump brands that are harvested from sustainability managed forests. It's also a good idea to switch from lighter fluid to a chimney starter. But if you really want to make a difference, get rid of your old grill and buy one that's electric or propane powered. A hamburger grilled over charcoal results in 105 times the carbon monoxide than the same burger cooked over propane. |
