Reported by: Matt Franzblau/WCIA-3 News Sunday, Aug 3, 2008 @05:00pm CDT (CHAMPAIGN)--- The passion and pride of Illini athletics are just one of the unique things in "our town" Champaign. From the U of I to High School sports, Champaign has it covered. With a major Division I university smack dab in the middle of the city, it's hard not to get caught up in all the orange and blue excitement. Recent runs to the Final Four and Rose Bowl have made the Illini sports program the toast of the town. Fans say, it's the atmosphere and excitement on game-day that makes ‘Our Town Champaign’ one of the best sports cities in the mid west.
"I look forward to seeing everybody wearing orange and everybody yelling I-L-L-I-N-I.” Says U of I student Aaron Walker. “That's just the greatest thing to hear." He says
"Illinois is probably one of the Big Ten schools that most would rather go to." Says Illini Graduate Elizabeth Hallengren
It's not just collegiate sports that make their home here, two high schools often battle it out in a cross-town rivalry on the gridiron and on the hard wood. Even some professional sports franchises have competed in Champaign. The Bears played home games at Memorial Stadium in 2002 and the Bulls will take on the Jazz at Assembly Hall this Fall.
