Reported by: Amanda Evans/ WCIA 3 News Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 @09:32pm CDT CHAMPAIGN- A Champaign restaurant owner is trying to calm fears as he gets ready to open an off track betting parlor.
Jupiter's at the crossing is adding on but not without a few raised eyebrows in the community.
Horse lovers can't wait for this OTB to get here but some neighbors still have questions. So we decided to check it out for ourselves. "We're going to have a wall of tvs and then desks where people can place their bets," said owner, Carlos Nieto as he gave us the tour. He has big plans for southwest Champaign. This year he opened the biggest pizzeria and billiards hall in town and he isn't stopping there with hopes of adding an off track betting center. But it's come with some concern from neighbors. Dena Vermette, lives just a block away from Jupiters and has a few worries, "My first reaction was I wish it weren't in the neighborhood because I always pictured neighborhoods being such, neighborhoods." Jupiters at the crossing sits in the middle of several neighborhoods.. Talks of an OTB is getting mixed reviews. One patron of Jupiter's Joe Lamb says he grew up loving horse races and can't wait, " I look at it as just another great form of entertainment for the neighborhood." Nieto says the OTB will be in the basement and at least 150-feet away from where kids play. He's promising an upscale place where people can enjoy the sport. Patron, Creg McDonald said, "This will be as first class as everything else in this town." For now some neighbors still have questions but as for Dena and Jim Vermette, they're putting their faith in ownership and hoping their neighborhood can stay a safe quiet place. "The jury is still out but we're trusting Carlos if this actually goes through to keep it at a very decent type neighborhood environment," said Vermette. Neighbors will get their first tour of the OTB this Sunday to ask questions and get a first hand look. He hopes to open it up in the next few months. As of now Nieto has agreed to a one year lease if it doesn't work he says it's out of here |
