Reported by: Jenny Gastwirth WCIA 3 Tuesday, Jul 29, 2008 @10:12pm CDT 21 year-old Jamar smith is in trouble after police say he violated his probation. He's not supposed to be drinking, but students say they've watched him drink repeatedly at bars. That's why many argue Smith is scoring fewer and fewer fans these days. They don't want to cheer on a player they say thinks he's above the law. "Obviously he doesn't care to be on the team and I don't think he's going to make any positive impact one bit," said Jack Ross. "He should have been cut a long time again," added Illini Fan Greg Reynolds. "[With] college sports, I think it's a privilege for people to be here." For many, he's lost that privilege. Smith is on probation for a drunk driving accident last year that left his teammate in serious condition. He's not supposed to have alcohol, but on Friday he was caught near Fubar on campus. Police say they could smell it on his breath. Students say it's not the first time he's broken the rules. "Several times and to the point of intoxication," said Champaign native and WCIA 3 intern Paige Dukeman. "It's very obvious and [I've] seen him taking many drinks clearly not caring about how many drinks he's taking." U of I sophomore Jack Ross says he's always wanting to take a shot or two.
So why didn't students call the cops? "People talk about it a lot, but as to going to someone and reporting it is kind of far away from what people might do," said Dukeman. What Coach Weber will do with Smith is still up in the air. Fans just don't want his run-ins with the law to hurt the team. "One person's mistake shouldn't affect the whole team or the school," said Bryd. "They're a very resilient team [and[ they prove it every year." The University of Illinois athletic department did not want to comment on what students say they see in bars. Smith is out on a 2500 dollars bond. He'll be back in court Wednesday and could be sentenced up to 14 years behind bars. |
