Reported by: Charles Vance/WCIA 3 Monday, Jul 28, 2008 @05:31pm CDT It's a landmark that's been a part of Champaign since the very beginning.
The First Presbyterian Church was founded five years before the city and it has continued to grow along with it ever since. The church has sat on the corner of Hill and State for more than 150 years. In fact the building that's there now was built in 1867 and it's clear the congregation expected champaign to grow. A group of 30 built a church that could hold 400. The sanctuary is actually on the second floor because when it was built the area was mostly swamp land and they needed to stay dry. Now years later they say they are still growing and working to always improve the community they've been a part of for so long. "I think the heartbeat of our congregation is that we are really concerned about how do we make a difference," says Senior Pastor Rick Snyder. "It's not just about inside the church it's the mission we carry on outside." |
