Reported by: Blake Wood / WCIA 3 News Tuesday, Mar 11, 2008 @09:47pm CDT SPRINGFIELD - Thousands of gun owners marched on the capitol Tuesday trying to send a message to lawmakers. They're protesting a package of gun control bills they fear would take away their rights. The Illinois Rifle Association says with the recent shooting at NIU they’re feeling more pressure then ever. The group says it actually backed a law that goes into effect this June, which makes it harder for people with mental illness to buy guns. They say every time there’s a shooting people overreact and that’s why they want to bring their message to Springfield. They don't want their rights taken away by bills that only allow a person to buy one gun a month or ban some assault weapons. Tuesday's rally brought in nearly 3-thousand people from all around the state. So far no bills relating to gun control have passed this year at the capitol. |
