Reported by: Cortney Hall Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @10:23pm CST The tent community has more than doubled. It was once 15 people.
Now there are 38 men and women looking for a place to stay. Several people will have to stay in one room. Restoration Urban Ministries is a Christian-based shelter. Men and women can't stay together unless they're married. Restoration says a lot of the new residents are getting last minute marriage licenses so they can stay together. “Generally we get people one at a time, one family at a time,” said Reverend Irvin Williams who runs Restoration Urban Ministries. “Here we've got a larger number to work with so it requires a whole lot more.” Another issue is this shelter doesn't allow pets. But one Tent City woman has a small dog. Restoration might make an exception so this woman will have a place to stay. But not everyone can stay here. Some of the Safe Haven members have criminal records. Restoration Urban Ministries is working with other shelters and the community to find other arrangements. |
